Illinois vs. South Carolina Cheez-It Citrus Bowl

The fighting Illini travel to Orlando, Fla.’s Camping World Stadium to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks at the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, right before the star of the new year on Dec. 31, 2024.  
The last time Illinois played the Citrus Bowl was in 1990 against Virginia — making the match a highly anticipated event for both players and fans alike. 
Fans from both Illinois and South Carolina showed up, with a majority presence coming from the Gamecocks filling the stands — bringing a highly energetic energy throughout the game.

Junior quarterback Luke Altmyer jogs with ball in hand after a time out is called. Altmyer is favorite player amongst Illini fans — earning the All-Big Ten Honorable Mention amongst other accolade for his performance in the 2024 season.

Illinois’ the Galloping Ghost holds a football on the field, as fans enter the stands. The Galloping Ghost pays tribute to Illinois football legend Red Grange. 
South Carolina’s marching band saxophone players watch the game, as they stand ready to preform. 
Sir Big Spur stands at its perch in front of Gamecock fans in the stands. Alongside Cocky the bird mascot for South Carolina, Sir Big Spur is a live rooster that mascots for the Gamecocks.  


Throughout the game, Cheez-It sponsorships and pop-ups were seen across the field, including a giant bowl filled with Cheez-Its. 
During a break period of the game, Cheez-It Mascot Ched-Z officiated a wedding between Erin Doolin and Erik Yates. Their Cheez-It wedding vows were read by an announcer as the couple were drive around on a Cheez-It float across the field. The couple also had their own corner on the field to celebrate with their loved ones and enjoy the rest of the game.

As the game came to its end, the Illini defeated the Gamecocks 21-17, which was then followed by a ceremony on-field as they accepted their trophy presented. The Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, came down to celebrate the win with the players and staff. After the celebration, the Illini walked off the field in joy and said their farewell to fans in the stands as they left to head back to Champaign, Ill. and into the new year.
